Grain Spawn FAQ

Lion's mane mushrooms growing on a log

Section 01

Using grain spawn

Is grain spawn the same as a mushroom grow kit?

No. Grain spawn is not an all-in-one kit and cannot be used to fruit mushrooms straight out of the bag — it must be mixed with bulk substrate first.

If you'd like a ready-to-grow kit, try a Spray & Grow Kit or Fruiting Block Kit.

How do I use grain spawn?

Grain spawn can be used in a variety of ways:

  • Indoors: mix with bulk substrate to grow in bags, containers, or to create fruiting cakes.
  • Outdoors: mix with straw or wood chips to make beds and containers. Note: grain spawn cannot be used for log inoculation.
  • Grain-to-grain transfer: extend the life of your grain and create more spawn. Grain spawn can also be used to make plug or sawdust spawn.
Can I fruit mushrooms directly off of grain spawn?

Unfortunately no — mushrooms don't fruit well off of grain alone. Some may eventually grow, but yields will be minimal. It's much better to use grain spawn to inoculate other substrates.

Most mushrooms prefer to fruit off of grain mixed with manure, hardwood, sawdust, compost, or straw. Oyster mushrooms will grow on all of these.

For an easy indoor starting point, try a Spray & Grow Kit or Fruiting Block Kit — fully colonized on amended sawdust and ready to grow.

What substrate should I use with my grain spawn?

It depends on what your species prefers. The most common fruiting substrates are manure, hardwood, sawdust, compost, or straw. See our Mushroom Substrate Compatibility Guide for species-specific guidance.

Can I use North Spore sterile substrates with North Spore grain spawn?

Yes. Our sterilized substrates are recommended for all indoor grows and many outdoor grows calling for manure or hardwood.

When do you use grain spawn vs. sawdust spawn?

Both types can be used interchangeably outdoors. Note that grain spawn cannot be used for log inoculation.

Some growers prefer sawdust spawn for outdoor beds and containers since it contains less grain, which can attract critters in the yard.

How much substrate can one 6 lb. bag of grain spawn inoculate?

One 6 lb. bag of grain will inoculate 120–165 lb. of sterilized sawdust, or 100–130 lb. of pasteurized straw.

What kind of yield can I expect?

It's difficult to estimate overall yield — there are many ways to use grain spawn, many substrate types, and every growing environment is unique.

Storage & handling

How do I store my grain spawn, and for how long?

Grain spawn can be stored for up to 3 months in the refrigerator.

Note: Pink oyster spawn is not cold-tolerant and cannot be refrigerated. Store at room temperature for up to 1 month.
Can I use some spawn and save the rest for later?

Best practice is to plan on using the entire bag once it's opened. Attempting to store it after opening will most likely result in contamination.

Should I purchase insulated shippers for my grain spawn?

We recommend insulated shippers when daytime temperatures in your area are above 80°F. Spawn shipped in our insulated shippers is guaranteed to arrive healthy and viable.

Our insulated shippers fit up to 4 bags of spawn each. We charge a flat rate of $30 for the first shipper and $15 for each additional, plus normal shipping costs. This covers the shipper itself, ice packs, and the extra shipping weight they add.

Quality & product details

My grain spawn looks uncolonized — is it ok to use?

All of our grain is fully colonized upon shipment. Some species — including Lion's Mane, Pink Oyster, Hen of the Woods, and Chicken of the Woods — have faint mycelium and can look uncolonized. Rest assured, they are. Spawn can also look less colonized if it gets jostled during shipping, which is similar to how it looks when you break it up to use it.

Your spawn is likely still 100% viable, but if you have concerns send photos to info@northspore.com and we'll take a look.

Is my mushroom spawn moldy? What is this white or yellow substance?

That's mycelium — the primary body of the fungus, not mold. White growth is normal; yellow is normal for Chicken of the Woods. A good analogy: if a mushroom is an apple, mycelium is the apple tree. Seeing it throughout your bag indicates healthy spawn. If you see green or black, the culture may be contaminated — discard it and reach out to us for confirmation.

Different species show different amounts of visible mycelium — Lion's Mane, for example, has a wispy, faint mycelium. Mycelium is often broken up in shipping; let the bag sit for a few days and it should bounce back.

Is your grain spawn organic?

Yes, our grain spawn is USDA Certified Organic.

What is your grain spawn made from?

Our grain spawn is a proprietary blend of nutrient-rich organic millet and wheat berries.

What type of bags does your grain spawn come in?

We use gusseted 2.2 mil polypropylene bags with a high-efficiency 0.2 micron filter patch.

How is your grain sterilized before inoculation?

All grain spawn is sterilized in a commercial-grade autoclave. Sterility is verified using biological indicators and temperature sensors.
