About this strain

Isolated from a Maine apple orchard where morels were fruiting naturally. Morels span a range of feeding strategies, and the yellow morels this strain belongs to sit toward the host-dependent end. They appear to form associations with tree roots and have consistently resisted cultivation without a partner tree.

That is why an orchard planting, rather than a bed, is the approach that makes sense here. This strain's orchard origin makes it our best candidate for establishing that relationship with apple trees. New as of 2025, we'll update this page as results come in.

How it works

  1. Choose your site

    Find a suitable apple tree with dappled shade and reasonable drainage, and plan to sow around the root zone. This strain was found under older trees, but we don't know yet whether young or older trees work better.

  2. Prepare the ground

    Clear the area where you intend to plant, then dig several shallow holes around the base of the tree, out toward the drip line.

  3. Distribute the spawn

    Break up the spawn and divide it between the holes, filling each one. Spread it around the tree rather than putting it all in one spot, so the spawn meets live roots in more places. We can't give you an optimal rate. Nobody has one for this species.

  4. Cover and water in

    Cover the holes back over with the soil you dug out, then water them in. Water occasionally in dry stretches, but avoid waterlogging.

  5. Watch each spring

    Morels fruit in spring when soil warms and nights stay above freezing. This may take years rather than a single season. Keep notes and tell us what you see.
