Receiving & Storage

Remove starter from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Plant & Grow starters should be used within 1 week of receipt. If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your block for up to 6 months.

How to Grow

Oyster mushrooms are vigorous, fast-growing, and perfect for new outdoor cultivators. With their dramatic colored caps and savory flavor, they bring both beauty and bounty to shaded garden spaces.

How to Initiate Fruiting Outdoors

  • Choose a shaded location: Find a cool, humid spot like under trees, beside a fence, or in a sheltered garden bed.
  • Bury your block: Remove the plastic entirely from your block. Bury the block completely and cover with about 1" of soil or mulch.
  • Maintain consistent moisture: Mist the surrounding soil or mulch regularly (1–2x daily in dry weather) to prevent the block from drying out.

When to Plant

  • Most Oysters thrive in cooler temperatures (ideally 55–65°F), and Pink Oysters like it a little warmer (ideally 70-80°F ).

Special Considerations

  • Watch for rapid growth—oysters can mature quickly and drop spores if not harvested in time.
  • Consider placing straw or leaf mulch around (not on) the block to help regulate humidity without suffocating airflow.

Harvesting

  • Pick clusters when cap edges are still curled under for best texture, flavor, and shelf life.
  • Harvest young to reduce spore production and improve storage.
  • Use both hands or a clean knife to gently remove entire clusters without damaging the substrate.

With minimal effort, oysters will often produce multiple flushes—making them one of the most rewarding mushrooms to grow in the garden.

Kind Giveaway - Unfortunately No Results (Yet?)

I feel very fortunate that North Spore continues to offer giveaways to its community and provide resources and products to help guide folks through the world of mycology and it's related cultivation. I was lucky enough to be selected to win a plant and grow garden block and received a Black King Oyster starter block.

I am based in the PNW and planted the block in mid-March 2026 and as of the end of July, haven't seen any development except the ground sunken in a bit. I have followed the instructions regarding moisture, location selection, and temperatures. Average temps were in the 50s and low 60s for the first few months. As of June, we started seeing averages creep into the 70s. Now that Summer is in full effect, I feel like any window of opportunity for growth is gone.

I cannot in good conscience rate a giveaway/free product at 1 star, but if I had paid for this product, I would be looking into a refund or replacement. North Spore is amazing and they are a great supplier for so many things - I wish I had found success with this one!

I made a number of mistakes, and even a surprise March snowstorm and it still came through with flying colors. Would recommend not using wood chips for a topping layer, unless you enjoy picking embedded chips out of your bounty, though it absolutely did work. Planted during the late winter/early spring rains, which meant I did nothing but admire (AFTER finding and preparing a suitable spot.)

First flush has given me 2-3lbs and they are fantastic
