Buried spawn is the leading approach to growing morels today and the commercial standard in China. Our partner CERAMYCA has spent years refining it in France, replacing loose buried spawn with a reusable terracotta pod that lifts back out of the bed at the end of the season. There's growing evidence that morel mycelium feeds on soil bacteria as well as on the grain you give it, and the iron oxide in fired clay appears to make the pod wall a favorable surface for that bacterial activity.

About This Method

North Spore has partnered exclusively with CERAMYCA, European pioneers of modern morel cultivation, to bring their strains, ceramic pod system, and probiotic methodology to North American growers for the first time.

This kit uses three CERAMYCA ceramic pods instead of raking spawn into the soil surface or dropping it loose into holes. Each pod is filled with living spawn and buried directly in your prepared bed. The porous terracotta traps symbiotic soil bacteria that fuse with the mycelium and feed it through the cold season.

Key Process Points:

  • Spawn fills each pod and colonizes outward through the soil over the cool season
  • After 7–10 days, a ring of white powdery mycelium appears around each pod at the soil surface, signaling healthy colonization
  • The pods lift out of the ground at season's end, so the same bed can be replanted next year instead of rotated
  • No nutrient bags required (see FAQ for why)

How it works

  1. Prepare Your Soil

    Use well-draining soil with at least 3% organic matter. Most healthy garden soil already meets this and won't need amending. If yours falls short, the best amendment is well-aged hardwood compost. Either build a raised bed or use the ground.

  2. Test and Adjust pH

    Morels prefer alkaline soil, ideally around pH 8. If yours is acidic, work in about 8 oz of calcium carbonate (garden lime) per bed. Avoid hydrated or slaked lime, which is too harsh for the mycelium.

  3. Water Your Bed

    Saturate the soil thoroughly before sowing. This initial watering needs to happen before the pods go in the ground. If you're watering from the tap, let it sit out uncovered for 24 hours first so the chlorine can dissipate.

  4. Bury the Pods

    Dig three holes about 4–6 inches deep, spaced roughly 16–18 inches apart. Fill each pod generously with the included spawn, then sink one pod per hole and cover with about an inch of soil so the surface is level.

  5. Set Up Your Row Cover

    Assemble the included row cover and shade cloth over your bed. It buffers temperature and protects the soil surface through incubation and vernalization.

  6. Watch for Colonization

    Within 7–10 days, look for a ring of white powdery mycelium around each pod. That's colonization taking hold.

  7. Manage Moisture and Temperature

    Maintain consistent bed moisture without waterlogging. Watch the surface for early primordia. In most US climates, this is most likely to happen in the spring following your fall planting.

  8. Harvest at the Right Moment

    Harvest when caps are fully formed but before they open fully.

No. They're sometimes used with the buried method to boost yields, but they're not required for a successful harvest, and they add a contamination risk we'd rather first-time growers avoid.

The best amendment is well-aged hardwood compost, about two years old and already dark and broken down; skip fast, high-heat compost, which tends to be biologically inactive. Avoid soil recently exposed to fresh wood chips, conifers, black walnut, or plants like sage, bay laurel, garlic, or onions, since these can inhibit morel mycelium. Skip chemically treated soil as well.
