About this strain

Isolated from post-burn ground in New Hampshire and identified as Morchella exuberans, one of the black morels that fruits almost exclusively after wildfire. Burn morels are well-known in the western US but underreported in the Northeast. The prevailing theory is that it's not the fire itself that triggers fruiting, but the soil chemistry it leaves behind: carbon-rich, alkaline, and disturbed. That's the environment this kit is designed to simulate.

How it works

  1. Choose a shady spot

    Find a location with dappled shade and reasonable drainage. Disturbed ground may improve your odds by reducing competition from established soil organisms.

  2. Amend the soil

    Mix hardwood ash into the top few inches of soil. A generous handful of ash per square foot is a reasonable starting point. Ash from your fireplace works great. Or find some here.

  3. Distribute the spawn
