Austernpilze „Snow Oyster“ (Pleurotus ostreatus) sind eine beliebte, fleischige und feste Austernpilzsorte. In der Wildnis findet man sie oft auf absterbenden Ahornbäumen wachsend. Sie haben einen süßeren Geschmack und ein süßeres Aroma als andere Austernpilze und behalten beim Kochen ihre Form und Textur.

„Snow Oyster“-Pilzstecker sind ideal für Pilzzüchter, die zum ersten Mal Pilze auf Baumstämmen anbauen, da sie schnell besiedeln und zuverlässige Produzenten sind. Sie sind auch eine kälteliebende Sorte, die in den kühleren Monaten Früchte trägt.

Eigenschaften: Austernpilze haben einen hohen Proteingehalt, mehrere B-Vitamine und alle essentiellen Aminosäuren (Marley, 2009). Zu ihren medizinischen Vorteilen gehören die Förderung der Antitumoraktivität und die Senkung eines hohen Cholesterinspiegels. Fruchtkörper und Destillationen von Austernpilzen haben in mehreren Studien an Mäusen, Ratten und Hamstern gezeigt, dass sie die Tumorgröße reduzieren (Hobbs, 1995). Darüber hinaus wurden Austernpilze in der Tschechischen Republik als Hauptbestandteil eines Nahrungsergänzungsmittels zur Behandlung von hohem Cholesterinspiegel verwendet (Hobbs, 1995). Inoculation

Works well with the Log, Stump, and Totem methods. Colonization is fast and should start producing in 4-12 months. They fruit best in the spring and fall and prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen, though they will also work on maple.

Cultivation

Ideal project size: Plug spawn is ideal for smaller projects of 1-10 logs, though some log cultivators will use them for larger projects.

Storing

If you don't plan to use within 3 weeks, you may refrigerate the plug spawn for up to 6 months.

Cooking

Snow Oysters can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all Oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook Snow Oysters until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Cautions & Considerations

• If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

• Aside from being kiln dried, our wooden dowels are not treated in any other way.

Frequently Asked Questions

After inoculation, most logs take 6–12 months before producing their first flush of mushrooms. Colonization depends on temperature, moisture, and wood type. Once established, a log can fruit for 3–7 years.

Always use freshly cut, disease-free logs. Old or rotting wood may contain competing fungi or be too dry for successful colonization. Ideally, inoculate within 2–4 weeks of cutting.

Plug spawn (wooden dowels) is easier for beginners and ideal for smaller projects. Sawdust spawn is faster to colonize and more economical for larger batches or commercial growers.

Store logs in a shady, humid area close to the ground. In dry or hot weather, occasional watering or soaking can help maintain moisture. Avoid full sun or windy spots, which can cause bark cracking.

Snow oyster is beautiful.

Fun if you are a fun guy. Very pretty. I keep my logs in a humid greenhouse and even get flushes on warm snaps in December in South Dakota.

I was given a box of snow oyster plugs 3 years ago for a gift. I 'planted' them in a big stump that was in our back yard, possibly a maple. I pretty much ignored them after the first few months and eventually forgot about them. But they popped up last year, and are back again this year! I'm so impressed with how the plugs worked I'm purchasing Lions Mane to try on cherry logs.

Snow Oysters

I can't say much about the snow oyster mushrooms plugs that I recently received, because they've only been in the logs for less than a month. But the ones that I bought a few years ago have produced several good-sized crops. That's why I bought more.

So easy!

These plugs are so easy to plant, which is great. I like that all I have to do is drill holes and stick the plugs in--it's so simple!! I gifted a kit for the oyster mushrooms to my dad for Father's day and bought extra spawn and I'm excited to see how they perform. The resources are really helpful as well--we inoculated a mulberry log that fell in the backyard. I never knew that you could grow mushrooms like this! He is an avid mushroom hunter and loved the gift.

Worked great!

They're perfect! Bought 100 plugs back in the spring of 2019 and got flushes on the logs starting in the spring of 2020. Soaked them in water for about 20 hours every 7 weeks or so during the warmer months to force flushes. Bought more plugs this year, looking forward to when they start to fruit next year!

Easy Inoculation
