Storage

If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your spawn for up to 6 months

That's not mold, it's mycelium!

Your kit includes plug spawn colonized with mushroom mycelium. It may appear covered with a soft, white, mold-like substance - that's the mushroom mycelium! It is completely normal. The mycelium of some species is more prominent than others.

Inoculation

All of our species work well with the log and stump methods. Colonization may start producing in 4-12 months, though fruiting is dependent on environmental triggers.

Cautions & considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

After inoculation, most logs take 6–12 months before producing their first flush of mushrooms. Colonization depends on temperature, moisture, and wood type. Once established, a log can fruit for 3–7 years.

Always use freshly cut, disease-free logs. Old or rotting wood may contain competing fungi or be too dry for successful colonization. Ideally, inoculate within 2–4 weeks of cutting.

Plug spawn (wooden dowels) is easier for beginners and ideal for smaller projects. Sawdust spawn is faster to colonize and more economical for larger batches or commercial growers.

Store logs in a shady, humid area close to the ground. In dry or hot weather, occasional watering or soaking can help maintain moisture. Avoid full sun or windy spots, which can cause bark cracking.

Easy to use so far but not accurate quantity

I’d like to start by saying that customer service did remedy this issue for me, but I want to make it clear to everyone that 500 plugs will *not* inoculate 10-20 logs. In my case, I had 6” diameter logs that were about 3-4ft long and I got 5 logs out of this. There is mixed information across the website on the number of logs each kit will fulfill. Since reaching out I still don’t see them editing the content on the site, but the product itself is great and so is the company!

I really enjoyed this whole kit. I have a bees wax pot that I use for candles. I would recommend having some type of pot to use for these pellets as well.

Beginner friendly!

We never considered trying to grow mushrooms before, but we had some recently felled birch and oak logs in the neighborhood and thought we should give it a try. We borrowed an angle grinder from the local tool library and were able to inoculate the logs with this kit and easy to follow instructions. Looking forward to fruiting!

Drill bit too big!

I ordered the beginner log inoculating kit. The drill bit was way too big, as pictured. This made my project way more complicated, and I ended up having to use my own drill bit. Im very disappointed, unfortunately. I can't recommend this product.
