It really is this simple:

1.

Source logs

The best wood species for inoculation are Oak, Hard Maple, Alder, Beech, Hophornbeam, Hornbeam, and Sweetgum.

Drill holes about 6 inches apart from each other. You can use an angle grinder to speed up the process significantly, but you'll need an adapter.

2.

Insert plug spawn

Place plugs into pre-drilled holes and use a mallet or rubber hammer to drive the dowels into the log.

3.

Seal with wax

Melt your wax with a crockpot or by using the double boiler method. Use the wax applicator to seal in moisture and keep foreign bacteria and fungi out. This will allow your mycelium to get a head start and colonize the entire log.

Optionally, dip each end of the log in wax to further seal in moisture and improve your chances of colonization.

If you inoculate your logs in the spring, you could see mushrooms growing as soon as 6 months later!

"It took about 6 months for the first Shiitake to appear, now they fruit in spring and fall when it rains. I'm ordered more, been very pleased. Oh and they're delicious!!" -Rebecca P.

"The plugs have been inoculated into the logs. It was a fun process and can't wait to see some fruits next year. Wonderful product, recommended and I will purchase again." - Joshua G.

"We bought an additional variety and this kit of spore plugs to make mushroom logs, and had such a fun afternoon as a family! The whole process was easy and fun: selecting logs, labeling them, drilling, hammering in the spore pegs, sealing them with wax. Every step was easy and we were proud of our efforts! Obviously, no mushrooms at this time, but we are hopeful for a wonderful “watch it grow” kind of experience." - Sarah J.
