Why we love them:
Pink oyster mushrooms aren’t just strikingly beautiful. They are also succulent and savory, and are perfect sautéed or added to pastas, pizzas, and more. As a tropical oyster mushroom strain, they thrive with higher humidity and their color intensifies if given adequate indirect sunlight. Given their denser texture, pink oysters make a wonderful meat substitute. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can find recipes that use them in everything from burritos to bbq sandwiches. They even make amazing vegan bacon, too!
Our pink oyster mushroom kits are reliable producers and tend to yield large flushes of beautiful light pink to deep pinkish-red mushrooms when given adequate humidity. With continued proper care, you may be able to get multiple flushes. (We 100% guarantee your first flush of mushrooms, but hope you'll try for 2 or 3!)
That's not mold, it's mycelium!
Your kit includes an amended sawdust block fully colonized with mushroom mycelium. It may appear covered with a soft, white, mold-like substance - that's the mushroom mycelium! It is completely normal. The mycelium of some species is more prominent than others.

1) Inside this box is an amended sawdust block that has been completely colonized by mushroom mycelium. Open the front of your kit along the perforated line and dispose of the remaining cardboard.
2) Slice an 'X' into the plastic underneath with a sharp knife or scissors.
3) Lift open the top of your box to find the sprayer and instruction booklet. Fill the sprayer with tap water and generously spritz the plastic where you sliced your 'X' shape. Spritz your kit at least twice daily - more if you're in a particularly dry climate. (If your mushrooms start to grow but dry up and die, your growing conditions may be too dry and you should make a humidity tent!)
4) Place your kit in the most humid part of your home and outside of direct sunlight. We suggest putting it on a kitchen counter close to a sink. The mushroom mycelium will sense the oxygen in the air and produce mushroom 'pins,' another term for 'baby mushrooms.'
5) It usually takes 5-14 days for pins to form. Once pins begin to form, mushrooms will grow quickly. So when you spot your first pins keep an eye on them. The warmer the environment the faster they will grow. Mushrooms should be ready to harvest 2-5 days after pin formation.

Do not refrigerate pink oyster kits. If you're not ready to use immediately, your Pink Oyster Spray & Grow Kit stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, for up to 3 months.

The classic North Spore recipe is to chop the pink oyster mushrooms and sauté them in a heavy pan on medium heat with butter, garlic, and loads of fresh thyme and rosemary (or whatever other herbs you happen to have on hand!). Cook until the mushrooms have released their liquid, then continue cooking until that liquid has cooked off and the mushrooms begin to brown. This can take from 20-30 minutes. Deglaze your pan with a splash of white wine, reduce once more, and finish with a touch of heavy cream. Season generously with salt.

The spawn used in our mushroom kits is grown on USDA certified organic grain and made with organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our kits are handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods and supplements from farms and forests in New England and North America.

Simply take a trash bag or other loosely fitting plastic bag and put PLENTY of 1/2 inch holes in it (THIS IS IMPORTANT: Mushrooms exhale CO2 and inhale oxygen. They will suffocate themselves if there isn’t adequate airflow! Pink oysters that look stringy or strange are usually growing that way because they need more air!). Spray the slice at least once per day with the included spray bottle. If you choose to use a humidity tent make sure to spray the inside of the tent once per day to maintain humidity.

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.
Mushrooms grow spores as they develop. This is a natural means of reproduction. This is when people with allergies or compromised immune systems may want to consider putting fruiting mushroom kits outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Spores in mushrooms sometimes cause respiratory irritation. In rare cases, spores may also cause irritation for some non-allergic or non-immunocompromised mushroom growers. If you are one of them, it is recommended to reduce the overall spore load by harvesting mushrooms while they are still in their younger growth stages.

Not so easy
I’m absolutely LOVING the experience, it’s fascinating! The grow kit got me hooked, but I made the mistake of eventually cutting off the clear plastic flaps because they were in the way for spraying. The rapid progression of the first few days was so awesome, beautiful color, growing to about an inch… then they stopped growing, turned whitish. Living in Colorado, I knew I couldn’t provide the adequate moisture, so I bought a clear plastic box, drilled lots of holes in it, and put a layer of perlite at the bottom with your spawn box in it. After the mushrooms stopped growing, I prepared some chopped straw, soaked it with a little hydrated lime, and used a small laundry basket to layer straw and the crumbled spawn. It’s been 10 days, I took a peek and the mycelium seems to be spreading throughout the straw. At this point the jury is still out, but I’ll let you know. I do realize that conditions aren’t ideal: the spawn was already somewhat moist, and I didn’t sterilize the straw. Difficult to do. But I’m excited and hugely curious!

Mushrooms galore!
I received these as a Christmas gift, and I was so afraid after weeks of not being stored correctly they wouldn’t produce any mushrooms. I was so happy that after following the kit’s instructions, mushrooms started growing in a couple days! This is such a cool product and I can’t wait to purchase more kits from them!

pink oysters- mist a lot to get a good yield
This is the third mushroom growing kit we’ve done. The first was from a local class with Shiitake mushrooms, the last two from North Spore (with Pink Oyster mushrooms). We’re in Utah and found that the small mister included in the kit was inadequate to keep the fungi growing without drying up. Our first flush with just the mister was small and not impressive. For the second flush we used a small spray bottle we bought from the grocery store- worked out much better and the yield was amazing. We kept the mushrooms in the kitchen and sprayed every time we entered the room. Probably 8-10 times each day. The oysters turned out amazing and were incredibly delicious.

Wonderful
We had two boxes: Lions Main, 2 Oyster varieties. We have only used Lions main. It produced very good.

Good
Fruited quickly but it was a small flush

Fun and easy to use kit!
These kits are a super easy and way to grow and eat your own mushrooms! It’s amazing watching them grow on your kitchen counter and getting to enjoy cooking them with a meal. I also recommend North Spore’s grain inoculation bags and manure boomer bags
Awesome
Ive done 3 of these kits and I love them. always get lots of big flushes.
Awesome gift
My husband was absolutely enthralled with the whole growing process when I gifted him this kit for his birthday. We got two flushes and enjoyed the pink oyster mushrooms well sauteed as a pizza topping! Fun and easy and yummy and a way better gift than stuff that often turns into clutter. Highly recommend. Have already ordered more kits.

#1 Pick!
Of all the kits I've had from North Spore, all that have produced quite well, the pink oyster is my #1 pick! It is the fastest producer(2 flushes in the first week) and the biggest producer. After multiple flushes and the flushes get smaller or they aren't quite as pretty pink, I broke the block up in an old laundry basket filled with UNSTERYLIZED wheat straw soaked overnight, and placed on my back porch. I waited a coupla weeks and got a nice flush, followed by two more before the humidity got too low and they dried out. I can only imagine what could have happened if I had done it all the correct way, and maintained the proper humidity!

Easy and rewarding
Had a great time with this grow kit. I've bought it twice and harvested 5 flushes from the last one. Growth stalled after the second flush and using a humidity tent helped a lot. Very foolproof - don't stress over it, they are mushrooms and are going to grow pretty much no matter what. Even if it seems like nothing is happening just let them be for a few days.

Great advice, Harry! Reach out if you have any questions in the future.
