Organic Golden Oyster Mushroom Grain Spawn

Discontinued

Our USDA-certified golden oyster (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) grain spawn feature a tropical strain that produces beautiful clusters of bright, jaw-droppingly beautiful mushrooms with medium yellow caps and long delicate stems. A favorite at farmer's markets, they have a mild nutty flavor and aroma reminiscent of cashews. Golden oysters are great for beginners and are reliable indoor year-round producers. If kept in the right conditions, they will yield substantial first, second, and even third harvests (making them an ideal commercial variety!) As a tropical strain, they thrive with higher humidity.

Golden oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor cultivation year round. When used for outdoor cultivation, golden oysters are generally not cold tolerant and fruit prolifically in summer months.

Recommended use:

  • Golden oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor production using sawdust or straw or outdoor production using straw or wood chips.
  • Do not use grain spawn for log inoculation.
  • This is not a mushroom grow kit. Golden oyster grain spawn must be combined with a substrate in order to fruit.

Upon receiving your spawn:

Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Indoor cultivation

Oyster mushroom grain spawn can be mixed into sterilized or lime pasteurized substrates including but not limited to hardwood sawdust, straw, and coffee grounds.

Note: Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it. If you are new to growing mushrooms, we recommend purchasing a book on mushroom cultivation.

Outdoor cultivation

Oyster spawn can be spread in chopped straw or wood chips as shown in the video below! Making outdoor beds is one of the easiest methods for growing any type of oyster mushroom.

For our complete mushroom beds pamphlet, click here

Be sure to use clean, untreated products when making outdoor beds.

Storing

If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your spawn for up to 4 months.

Cooking

Golden oyster mushrooms develop a cashew-like flavor when cooked to a slightly crispy texture. They can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook them until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Ingredients

Our grain spawn is USDA certified organic and made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. It contains a blend of locally sourced, organic, and non-GMO ingredients from farms in New England and North America.

Cautions & considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, grain spawn is not an all-in-one kit and cannot be used to fruit mushrooms out of the bag. Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it.

Grain spawn can be used in a wide variety of ways including indoor growing, outdoor growing, or to make more grain spawn. (Grain spawn can be used to make plug or sawdust spawn, not just other grain spawn.)

  • Indoors, you can mix grain spawn with bulk substrate to grow in bags, in containers, or to create fruiting cakes.
  • Outdoors, you can mix grain spawn with straw or wood chips to make beds and containers. (Note: Grain spawn can not be used for logs.)
  • A grain-to-grain transfer allows you to extend the life of your grain and create more grain spawn.

Delicious mushrooms!!!

First time ever growing mushrooms in our garden this winter (very low lech) - I inoculated aspen woodchips in buckets in January - a nice layer of mycelium had formed, but no mushrooms for 2 months. I transferred the woodchips into our 20 gal fabric grow bags on top of garden soil (to use as compost) and about 2 weeks later we harvested our first flush of Golden oysters!!! They are not as vigorous as blue oyster (5 flushes out of each bucket),a lot more delicate, but so delicious 😁

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, Kay! Please reach out if you ever need anything.

The Crash of North Spore

For 2-3 years, I used North Spore products successfully and gratefully, mostly oyster mushroom grain spawn. But for 2 years now, everything I've purchased from N Spore--the Boom Room II and grain spawn--has failed disasterously. The BoomRoomII had fundamental design flaws, the instructions were not simply bad, but disasterous--too many problems to even list here, let alone describe; and the last 2 oyster mushroom grain spawn bags grew black mold like I've never seen before anywhere, and not because I did anything wrong, as I purchased grain spawn from another company that grew perfectly, as N Spore's grain spawn with me in the past, all via the identical methods. The only reason I'm even writing this review--since I told them if they refunded my last grainspawn purchase they'd never hear from me again, and I promptly **unsubscribed** from their email list--is because despite unsubscribing and a 2 year pattern of terrible products and services (except they did immediately refund my last purchase, which tells me I wasn't the only one with that problem), THEY SENT ME AN EMAIL ASKING FOR THIS REVIEW. Talk about stupid. You **never** send such an email to an unsatisfied customer. I shouldn't have had to unsubscribe, they should have done that for me proactively. My best guess is that the company was bought out by people who have no idea what they're doing, or the original mycologists, if that's what they were, just never realized they aren't business people and so expanded the business having no clue what they were doing. But whatever happened, the company tanked about 2 years ago--REALLY BADLY--and I can't believe they're still in business. Where do they get the money to buy these fake 5 star reviews? They haven't earned them any time recently. And NS, don't worry if you delete and never post this review, as I'll share it with deserving people elsewhere, where it will get the attention it--and all who read it--deserve. The crash of North Spore has been a significant loss for me, but thank god, there are competitors offering legitimate products (not that NS is any longer real competition).

My third time ordering from here. This time it wasn't to give as a gift. Love that they give you guides to grow. Can't wait for my mushrooms to fruit!

We're so glad you're enjoying the experience! Thanks for the great review.

This is a nice eye popping mushroom for the farmers markets. Not my personal favorite to eat but customers like it because of that bright color, so it almost always sells. And of course, with all Norse four items. They are healthy and love to grow.

Grew like crazy!

I have very little experience with mushroom cultivation. Last year I purchased these to attempt to grow them in five gallon buckets with straw as the substrate. I saw many videos on YouTube that complicated the process, but I decided to just wing it. It worked out great and I received three good sized flushes. Although I will say, each flush became progressively smaller, but I think that is normal.
Would definitely recommend to the complete beginner!

Thanks for your review, Daisy! Congrats on your harvest.

Golden Oysters

Fantastic product with delicious results. My only issue with the product as a whole is the lot/generation info sticker has been put above the filter patch on each bag I've bought, which makes resealing these bags very difficult. I do not have the need or ability to grow 100lbs worth of fruiting bags in one go so there is a need to be able to reseal the spawn bags when i'm done with a batch of fruiting bags so it can be in good shape a few weeks down the line when i'm ready to start another batch.

Awesome size harvests

These were just two photos from my harvest two weeks ago! I had a total of 5 cardboard berry boxes taken out of my grow tent. The largest oyster cluster I have grown so far has been a Golden Oyster that was 14.3 oz. They are so beautiful and everyone loves the Goldens! I just bought 3 more bags of Golden Grain Spawn! Cant wait to make more buckets!!!

Easy to grow

I was very happy with my purchase. Mushrooms grew very fast and kept on growing. On my second flush now. Hoping for more!!
