Our USDA-certified organic Pink Oyster (Pleurotus djamor) grain spawn features a tropical strain that produces beautiful clusters of light pink to deep pinkish-red caps that are a favorite at farmers' markets. They are succulent and savory, and have a denser texture than other oyster varieties. They are great for beginners and are reliable indoor year-round producers. And, if kept in the right conditions, they will yield substantial first, second, and even third harvests (making them an ideal commercial variety!) Note that the shelf life of pink oysters is shorter than other oyster varieties. As a tropical strain, they also thrive with higher humidity.

Pink oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor cultivation year round. When used for outdoor cultivation, pink oysters are not cold tolerant and fruit prolifically in summer months.

Please note pink oyster mycelium is a pale pink color which may be harder to see than other species. All spawn leaving our warehouse is fully colonized and ready to use.

Recommended use:

  • Pink oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor production using sawdust or straw or outdoor production using straw or wood chips.
  • Do not use grain spawn for log inoculation.
  • This is not a mushroom grow kit. Pink oyster grain spawn must be combined with a substrate in order to fruit.

Upon receiving your spawn:

Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Indoor cultivation

Pink oyster mushroom grain spawn can be mixed into sterilized or lime pasteurized substrates including but not limited to hardwood sawdust, straw, and coffee grounds.

Note: Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it. If you are new to growing mushrooms, we recommend purchasing a book on mushroom cultivation.

Outdoor cultivation

Pink oyster grain spawn can be spread in chopped straw or wood chips as shown in the video below! Making outdoor beds is one of the easiest methods for growing any type of oyster mushroom.

For our complete mushroom beds pamphlet, click here

Be sure to use clean, untreated products when making outdoor beds.

Storing

If you don't plan to use immediately, you can store your spawn in the fridge for up to 6 months.

Cooking

Pink oysters mushrooms can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook them until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Ingredients

Our grain spawn is USDA certified organic and made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. It contains a blend of locally sourced, organic, and non-GMO ingredients from farms in New England and North America.

Cautions & considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, grain spawn is not an all-in-one kit and cannot be used to fruit mushrooms out of the bag. Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it.

Grain spawn can be used in a wide variety of ways including indoor growing, outdoor growing, or to make more grain spawn. (Grain spawn can be used to make plug or sawdust spawn, not just other grain spawn.)

  • Indoors, you can mix grain spawn with bulk substrate to grow in bags, in containers, or to create fruiting cakes.
  • Outdoors, you can mix grain spawn with straw or wood chips to make beds and containers. (Note: Grain spawn can not be used for logs.)

Lovely and delicious

Just started to get a harvest from these since, if you see my Italian oyster review, the woodland bugs REALLY love the pinks so I'm doing these in a container. Too early to compare harvests, and even with slugs I have gotten a lot of pinks for 5 months running.
This variety is a drier oyster which makes it fabulous for a vegan BLT. Throw some Gateway to the North Spice House blend and some pepper on them and caramelize nicely and even my bacon-loving husband said the result was better than an actual BLT.
Pics are of my 5 month old spray and grow transplanted to the woods. My container grown ones aren't showing the deep color but the woodland grow are...well look.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, Laura! Our team is here to help if you ever need anything.

Pink oysters

Very easy to use, spread through layers of straw in a laundry basket, and placed in a shady spot in my garden. I have harvested the first flush, and there is a second one coming on now! I would recommend this product! Thanks!

Another great item. That sells well at farmers markets. Very sad there's such a short shelf life. But anything that tastes like bacon, it's going to sell. And it is very pleasing to the eyes and turns heads left and right.

The King of Mushrooms

I consider pink oyster to be the king of home grown mushrooms. Vigorous growth gives room for amateurs like me to get comfortable with sterilization techniques. They produce tons of mushrooms in a short (for mushrooms) time period, which is very rewarding. And to top it off, they are everyone's favorite in my house. They taste like not-salty chicken bullion. Delicious!

Wow Steven! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us! We so appreciate it.

Amazed!

My first time growing mushrooms and didn’t think it would be this easy or grow this quickly! 😃 Hurricane Milton stripped the leaves off my bamboo so I used that as my main substrate with a little crumbled tree bark, other dead leaves from my yard, wet those down and layered with the pink oyster grain spawn. I put some on the ground, in a hanging wire basket and also piled up in a wire cage. I misted everything in the mornings to keep it moist. I’m in Zone 9b in Florida, the weather is mild when they first started fruiting in less than 2 weeks on 11/2/24!

Well done, Nicki! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

SO easy and so fun

These were my favorite oyster mushrooms to grow in buckets indoors. I used buckets with drilled holes and pasteurized straw. The spawn worked amazing and the mushrooms are so pretty!

We're so glad you enjoyed the pink oysters, Emma! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

You can tell Northern Spore Pink Oyster Mushroom Grain Spawn came from a two parent home. NS inoculates love in every grain to ensure the mycelium has a nice home to thrive.

This love fuels the mycelium to achieve all of its personal and career goals. 5-year plan? I think not! NS Pink Oyster Mushrooms seized the day in about 14-days. Talk about an overachiever!

Without a doubt, I would highly recommend NS Grain Bags. For $30, this is the best investment to start a low budget mushroom operation.

1. Get some hardwood and straw pellets. 50-50 mix.
2. 5 lbs block-

a. 2.5 cups hardwood pellets
b. 2.5 cups straw pellets
c. 1.25 cups wheat bran
d. 1.4 liters (go more and not less with water) Field capacity when measuring moisture content.

3. Pressure Cooker because you supplemented wheat bran. 4 hours at 15psi. Let cool for 24-hours.

4. NS Pink Oyster Grain Spawn is added to the bag. Seal shut with a plastic sealer.

5. Place in a dark room. I like the temperature to be 75°-80°.

Fully colonized.

I purchased Pink Oyster spawn and the advice was to wait for two weeks. I put it in the closet and in two weeks the bag had turned completely white with mycelium. Tiny pink oysters started to form in the bag.
I left question on the answering machine and got a quick response call addressing my inquiry. Great customer service.
