The Organic Golden Oyster Mushroom Sawdust Spawn, previously offered for outdoor use, is undergoing a significant transition. North Spore, guided by scientific expertise and a strong commitment to ecological responsibility, has ceased offering this specific product for outdoor applications.

This decision stems from growing mycological concerns regarding the naturalization of Pleurotus citrinopileatus (Golden Oyster) in specific outdoor environments. Our brand ethos prioritizes sustainable mycology, ensuring product recommendations adhere to best ecological practices.

Founded by mycologists, North Spore emphasizes premium quality and environmental integrity. Our USDA Organic certification, common across product lines, reflects this dedication to responsible sourcing and cultivation practices.

For those eager to cultivate the vibrant Golden Oyster, we encourage exploring our extensive indoor growing solutions. These include certified organic ready-to-fruit kits and high-quality spawn, meticulously developed for controlled indoor environments, ensuring reliable, ecologically sound cultivation.

Should you seek other outdoor mushroom projects, consider our robust range of alternative oyster mushroom species or varieties chosen for ecological compatibility and proven outdoor performance. Our comprehensive educational resources assist in selecting the ideal mushroom for your growing aspirations.

North Spore remains dedicated to making mushrooms accessible to all, providing premium, scientifically-backed products and extensive cultivation support. Discover your next mushroom growing adventure with confidence, backed by expert guidance.

Inoculation

Logs:

Golden oysters prefer log, stump, and totem methods. Colonization is fast and should start producing in 4-12 months. Golden oysters are a tropical species and prefer to fruit in the summer months. They also prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen.

Storing

If you don’t plan to use your golden oyster sawdust spawn right away, store in the refrigerator. Use within 6 months of receipt.

Cooking

Golden oyster mushrooms develop a cashew-like flavor when cooked to a slightly crispy texture. They can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook them until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Ingredients

All our spawn is made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our sawdust spawn is handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods and supplements from farms and forests in New England and North America.

Cautions & considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Sawdust Spawn Frequently Asked Questions

Sawdust spawn is sterilized sawdust colonized with mushroom mycelium. It’s used to inoculate a growing substrate such as logs, wood chips, or outdoor garden beds to start mushroom growth.

It serves as the "seed" for your mushroom crop — transferring live, growing mycelium into your chosen growing medium.

Sawdust spawn is best for outdoor projects like logs, stumps, or garden beds and is slower to contaminate.
Grain spawn is ideal for indoor grows or bulk substrate inoculation because it colonizes faster but is more contamination-sensitive.

Sawdust spawn is mixed or packed into a substrate (like logs or wood chips) to inoculate it. Common methods include:

  • Drilling and filling holes in logs
  • Layering in outdoor wood chip or straw beds
  • Mixing with sterilized sawdust or wood pellets for bag cultivation

Most sawdust spawn performs best on hardwoods like oak, maple, or beech. Some species (like Wine Cap or certain Oysters) can tolerate small amounts of softwood in the mix.

Success!

My first time growing mushrooms. I used the cold pasteurization with lime on straw. I broke the one spawn block over two small laundry baskets and two 5 gal buckets, lasagna style. They colonized heavily in black garbage bags within 5 days. I’ve collected 4+ lbs of beautiful golden oysters from the first flush 2 weeks ago until yesterday. They are still producing! Not just small bunches, but big double handful bunches. Couldn’t have asked for better for my first experience.

Your grow looks amazing, Patricia! We're so glad you're enjoying the experience! We love to read reviews like this! It makes what we do all the more worth it.

Shade Bed Grow

Inoculated my beds 3 weeks ago to the day, spotted my first pins today. Really happy with how quickly these spawn have fruited! Less happy to discover that pillbugs are a fan of mushrooms, too, though. As always, love the customer service and product with North Spore.

Thanks for the great review, Emily! Please reach out if you ever need anything.

These are great

These took longer to colonize than I would have thought but once colonized, they are massive producers of beautiful delicious mushrooms. Last year I got over 200lbs of 20 logs of Tulip poplar.

We're so glad to hear about your success with the golden oysters, Kevin! Please reach out if you ever need anything.

Great for first time bucket growers

I set up various types of oysters in a bucket with a straw substrate under my deck and I was absolutely drowning in mushrooms. For a time, I was eating these things with a touch of oil and garlic bbq dry rub every day for a month just to keep up with production.
They grew readily and easily in Georgia kept under a deck using the bucket method.

That's so amazing to hear, John! We’re so happy you’re enjoying the experience so far! Enjoy your mushrooms!

Fantastic!

First time ever growing mushrooms and what an experience it is. Alot of fun to do and I've ordered more oyster, this time blue oyster and I'm waiting for it to colonize to see it grow. Golden oyster was a treat in itself. I grew them in a bucket and what great results I had. Highly recommend this product from North Spore.

Ready to thrive!

We've had some bizarre weather here, and I delayed starting these for longer than I planned. Apparently, this sawdust spawn isn't interested in waiting! It's been sitting in an office with absolutely no care, effort or maintenance on my part (although having ducklings in here means that it's pretty warm and humid), and I can now say that I've successfully grown mushrooms for the first time. I would definitely recommend following the instructions a little better than I did, but I can tell you from experience that the quality of this sawdust spawn is unreal!

a good start to mushrooms

I have had success with my Italian and Golden oyster mushroom sawdust spawn so far, outdoors in beds and a laundry basket . When the weather cools back down in the fall I hope to harvest much more from the other varieties I have started. My associate has had great success with the pink oyster spawn this spring. All were received active and alive, ready to go! Thanks Northspore!

Amazing growth outdoors

I created a 2' x 4' mushroom bed using spent straw. I was rewarded with lbs of Golden Oyster mushrooms. I will grow these annually.
The staff at North Spore is very helpful and I haven't been disappointed.
