Cultivation

Inoculation

Logs:

Blue oyster mushrooms work well with the log, stump, and totem methods. Colonization is fast and may start producing in 4-12 months, though fruiting is dependent on environmental triggers. They fruit best in the spring and fall and prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen. They will also work on maple.

Outdoor beds:

Containers:

Storage

If you don't plan to use your blue oyster sawdust spawn immediately, you can refrigerate it for up to 6 months.

Cooking

Blue oyster mushrooms can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when under-cooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook Oysters until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Ingredients

All our spawn is made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our sawdust spawn is handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods and supplements from farms and forests in New England and North America.

Cautions & Considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Sawdust Spawn Frequently Asked Questions

Sawdust spawn is sterilized sawdust colonized with mushroom mycelium. It’s used to inoculate a growing substrate such as logs, wood chips, or outdoor garden beds to start mushroom growth.

It serves as the "seed" for your mushroom crop — transferring live, growing mycelium into your chosen growing medium.

Sawdust spawn is best for outdoor projects like logs, stumps, or garden beds and is slower to contaminate.
Grain spawn is ideal for indoor grows or bulk substrate inoculation because it colonizes faster but is more contamination-sensitive.

Sawdust spawn is mixed or packed into a substrate (like logs or wood chips) to inoculate it. Common methods include:

  • Drilling and filling holes in logs
  • Layering in outdoor wood chip or straw beds
  • Mixing with sterilized sawdust or wood pellets for bag cultivation

Most sawdust spawn performs best on hardwoods like oak, maple, or beech. Some species (like Wine Cap or certain Oysters) can tolerate small amounts of softwood in the mix.

They’re popping now!

So easy, my first bucket grow. Used chopped straw from local feed straw. I was concerned at first because the straw was so full of seed that it looked like I had planted a lawn in the bucket. But this spawn is so aggressive that it didn’t seem to matter. Fully colonized the 5gal bucket at 2 weeks, and started pinning beginning of week 3. So fun!

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, Chris! Our team is here to help if you ever need anything.

Excellent product as usual

Was able to get a flush directly from block indoors, and then spawn to bulk outdoors

Thanks for sharing, Matt! We're so glad you're enjoying the experience.

I can't speak to the efficacy of the spawn itself because I just innoculated. That said, the packaging was sealed nice and tight and the mycelium really seemed to be colonizing the sawdust nicely. I really look forward to seeing how they run!

We're so happy you're enjoying the experience, Chris! If you need help with anything, please reach out.

Amazed and excited!!!!

Received my order on time and ready to plant. Followed easy instructions from the video tutorial and that was it. After planting realized sun hit directly on and only spot in the woods that I planted. BUT that didn’t matter within 3 weeks I was able to harvest enough for dinner. So delicious!!! This was my first time growing mushrooms and I’m hooked bad now!! Thank you so much for such a great product!

Amy! So great to hear you had a successful first harvest! Thank you so much for sharing.

I am so excited! I decided to try to add mushrooms to my garden this year and chose Northspore ! I am amazed that in one week I have blue oyster mushrooms ready to harvest and the shiitakes are right behind. I bought the blocks and planted them in a shady damp area. Now I’m hooked and want to add others! I’m search around for info as to how to harvest properly. Thank you Northspore f!!!

Buckets of Blue & Snow Oyster Mushrooms

Once I figured out how to prepare the buckets & chopped straw the rest was easy to get done... Then the hardest part is the hurry up & wait & wait. But the wait is definitely worth the time!!! See the added photos.
Besides using them fresh in cooking, I've also dehydrated (for soups & making powder), added to cabbage sauerkraut ferments with other vegetables...delicious!!
Also I found that the timely response from their customer help in answering my asked questions with info has been extremely helpful too.

Wow Dena! What a beautiful yield! Amazing to see the growth you had with your buckets. Thank you so much for the great review!

North Spore always delivers excellent, high quality products. I added compost and this sawdust spawn to corrugated cardboard and covered with mulch. I hope to create a mycelium mat to support my trees next spring!

Let’s Go!

Bought this and setup a fresh ground plot in my new “mushroom area” of the yard. It is well on its way and looking forward to multiple flushes and yummy mushrooms.

3 flushes in the first year and counting!

I grew blue and Italian oysters this year as well as wine caps and have been amazed at how many mushrooms we got in just this first season! I made the bed in may or June and by the end of July had an enormous flush! between the oysters and the blues I filled an entire bushel basket (from just one sawdust spawn pack each). I made the beds from a mix between free local mixed wood chips and store-bought straw and it seems to have worked beautifully. I am over the moon about being able to use shady spaces in my yard under other plants where I already mulch.

My husband said he's never seen me more excited than when I found the first flush. Felt like I was 5 on xmas morning again!

Now I just want MORE!

thank you!!

Thank you so much for sharing! It really is so exciting when they first pop up. We so appreciate the great review. We hope you enjoy them!

Produced so quickly

I picked this up randomly at Fedco, and I didn't know what to expect. But after four weeks outside in a straw bed, we're already getting mushrooms! Amazing! Despite the name, ours aren't really blue...more of a gray-tan color.

Prolific Grow

I started a basket grow end of March with lime pasturized straw. Six to seven weeks later and there are numerous mushrooms. The grow started slow, but picked up once I moved the basket to a full shade location.

Blue oyster mushrooms

I inoculated a straw bale with blue oyster spawn. About 6 weeks later several mushrooms have popped out. We've had a couple good rains and I'm expecting a big flush, can't wait!
I love the flavor of blue oysters.

GREAT PRODUCT - If you are on the fence, just order it

This is a high quality product. Very professionally packaged and shipped. The information included was so helpful. I started later in the season than I wanted to, but I still was able to harvest until it got too cold! I am in zone 4, and I cannot wait to see what happens when it warms up. I wish I could FILL my gardens with as many of North Spore's product as could fit! ... Goals. :) If you are unsure, I recommend you just do it.

We really appreciate the kind review! We’re so happy you’re enjoying the experience! Please reach out if you ever need anything.
