For absolute beginners, start with an automated monotub system
Start growing your own edible or medicinal mushrooms indoors. (All that's required is a spore syringe or liquid culture!) We designed this monotub kit specifically for beginners, pairing our beginner-friendly CVG bulk substrate with our Boomr Bin, coco coir, monotub filters, and Bin Tech Kit to make your first growing experiences more successful. When used with sterile technique, this combination is less likely to contaminate vs. using a more nutrient-rich substrate.
CVG is known for yielding consistent, dependable flushes. By using less substrate (2 bags instead of 3) you will get a higher inoculation rate, increasing colonization times and decreasing the chances of contamination. (Once you’re ready to level up, you can switch to Boomr Bag substrate for bigger yields)
About the monotub:
The patent-pending Boomr Bin design is optimized for all growers - whether you prefer lo-tech grows or want to connect automated upgrades (like fresh air fans and humidity controls.) As an added bonus, the monotub is made with food-grade materials that are FDA-approved for contact with consumables.
Automated monotub kit includes:
- (1) Boomr Bin monotub
- (1) FAE Fan Mini w/ power control
- (1) Myco-Mister Mini humidifier w/ hose
- (1) Monotub hose connector
- (1) Mycontroller humidity controller (hygrometer)
Substrate kit includes:
- (2) CVG sterile bulk substrate (5 lbs each)
- (1) Sterilized grain bag with injection port (3 lbs)
- (1) Myco Coco compressed coco coir (3.4L)
- (1) Sheet of 1" monotub filters
- (1) Sheet of 2" monotub filters
About the substrates:
Our CVG, sterilized grain bag, and coco coir are three growth mediums for colonization, incubation, and growth. The sterilized grain bag is first inoculated with your spores or liquid culture syringe to create spawn. The CVG is then mixed with your spawn for colonization.
Finally, once your monotub is colonized, coco coir is added as a casing layer to provide moisture retention, even gas exchange, and an optimal pH. We've also added two sizes of self-adhesive filters designed to keep our foreign spores and other contaminants while maintaining proper humidity, airflow, and gas exchange.
Boomr Bin features:
- Modular design accepts automated air exchange and humidification systems.
- Food-grade materials FDA-approved for contact with consumables.
- Compact durable design holds up to 20 pounds of substrate.
- Latches attached to base to prevent lid from popping off when picking up.
- Extra large latches with recessed grips for easy lifting and transport.
- Large rounded corners for easy cleaning and fewer places for contaminants to hide.
- Row of 1” holes placed lower in the lid to prevent fuzzy stems.
- Black light-blocking base helps colonization and aids in preventing side pinning.
- Modular design accepts automated fresh air and humidity systems.
- Dimensions: 22”(W) x 15”(D) x 11”(H)

Spawn to bulk ratio:
We recommended mixing 1 colonized grain spawn bag with 2-3 CVG bags. (Higher inoculation rates may improve your success.)
Optional add-ons:
Important notice:
Coco coir should only be added once the Boomr Bin is fully colonized and pins begin to form. Only a thin layer of coco coir (approx. 1/2 inch) is needed.
⚠️ Using tap water with a high mineral content (aka "hard water") with any humidifier can cause a fine white dust build to up and/or to be emitted. To avoid this, use distilled or demineralized water. Or, add a demineralization cartridge to the water tank. (This can be done by removing the top cover and placing the cartridge inside.)

CVG has been helping beginner growers experience the joys of bulk substrates for decades. It’s a simple recipe – Coco, Vermiculite, and Gypsum – that yields consistent results. We use premium, third-party tested ingredients, then hydrate to field capacity and sterilize in industrial autoclaves for a bulk substrate that provides dependable yields.
Each bag weighs 5 pounds. (Note: Bags are hydrated to field capacity.) Use CVG in monotubs and filter bags. Or, grow mushrooms from the bag or tray in a humidity-controlled grow room or Martha set up.

Spawn to bulk ratio:
We recommended mixing 1 colonized grain spawn bag with 2-4 bags of CVG. (Higher inoculation rates may improve your success.)
Best practices:
- We recommend clean hands, latex or nitrile gloves, and sterile technique when using Boomr Bag to reduce the introduction of contaminants.
- Be sure to mix colonized grain spawn thoroughly into your substrate.
- It is best practice to wait a minimum of 1 week after arrival before using sterile substrates to ensure they were not compromised during transit. Rest assured that your purchase is 100% guaranteed. If your substrate was compromised, we will replace it.

Our sterile grain bag with injection port was formulated by mycologists to maximize the speed and size of your mushroom grow. Each spawn bag contains 3 lbs of our proprietary blend featuring hydrated, nutrient-rich organic millet and wheat berries. Bags also include a self-healing injection port for use with a spore or culture syringe plus a 0.2 micron filter patch to block airborne contaminants while providing even gas exchange. Bag weighs 3 pounds. (Note: Bags are hydrated to field capacity.)
Spawn to bulk ratio:
We recommended mixing 1 colonized grain spawn bag with 2-3 Boomr Bags. (Higher inoculation rates may improve your success.)

IMPORTANT: Coco coir should only be added once monotub is fully colonized and pins begin to form. Only a thin layer of coco coir (1/4 to 1/2 inch) is necessary.
Coco coir provides many benefits to the mushroom cultivation process. In addition to moisture retention, the porous structure of coir material enables good exchange of air and water and is highly resistant to contaminants making it ideal for mushroom growing. It is often used as casing, added to substrates, and is even used in garden beds as an alternative to peat moss.

Boomr Bin & FAE Fan
We recommend cleaning your monotub between each use to keep all surfaces as sterile as possible.
- Wipe down all surfaces to remove dirt and spores with a soft cloth soaked in warm water.
- Sanitize by spraying with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution inside and out.
- DO NOT use bleach or abrasives.
