Quality Control & Assurance Protocols
We know that clean and healthy spawn and substrates are critical to mushroom growing. That's why we manage every step of the process -- from product development and production to testing and fulfillment. We are vertically integrated -- from culture work all the way to spawn and substrate production -- ensuring a quality end product. And our staff mycologists keep up to date on all best practices in our field. Additionally, we have a dedicated QAQC team that tests every batch of grain and substrate before it’s inoculated.
We also maintain a state-of-the-art mycology laboratory in Portland, Maine housed within our greater 25,000 sq ft production and fulfillment facility. We designed and built our labs to ensure every advantage in the infrastructure and process for maintaining clean conditions. And HEPA-filtered air is returned to the plenums above the rooms and recycled, resulting in positive pressures in the rooms and continuous scrubbing of the air.
✔️ Our Laboratory is split between our production labs, culture laboratory, and Ultra Clean Lab built to ISO 7 standards with 90 air changes per hour
✔️ Lab personnel wear tyvek suits, gloves, head and face coverings and work in laminar flow hoods
✔️ We perform monthly particle counts of all rooms to verify that the systems are working correctly
✔️ All of our flow hoods get tested weekly using a particle counter and settle plates to ensure the hoods are functioning properly
✔️ Grain spawn is made in a dedicated lab space and is inoculated in a laminar flow hood by trained personnel
✔️ Every 3 months we make new plates from our freezer stock
✔️ Cultures are maintained in a −80 ◦C freezer in glycerol, a cryoprotectant protect the cells from damage due to ice crystal formation
✔️ We use bioindicators to monitor our autoclaving process and have a dedicated quality control department
✔️ All sterilized substrates are tested after autoclaving for the presence of bacteria
✔️ Product batches are also tested for optimal pH and moisture content
More importantly, we focus on the greatest source of contamination: humans.
We provide rigorous training for sterile technique and uphold the highest practice standards for our lab employees.
