ShroomTek All-In-One FAQ

 ShroomTek

Can ShroomTek be used by beginners?

Yes, ShroomTek is easy to use and requires minimal maintenance. However, it is important to read through all of the instructions before you begin to gain a better understanding of the entire process from inoculation to fruiting.

What is the recommended ShroomTek inoculation ratio?

We recommend using at least 2.5-5ccs, but up to 15cc, of your favorite spore syringe or liquid culture syringe. Higher inoculation rates may improve colonization times and mitigate contamination.

What mushroom species are recommended for ShroomTek?

Due to the variety of ingredients, ShroomTek can be used to grow almost any manure-loving edible and/or medicinal mushroom species with the aim of producing fruiting bodies.

We do NOT recommend Morel, Winecap, Almond Agaricus or Blewit.

Can the bag and substrate be used more than once?

No, each ShroomTek Bag should only be used once.

How long can you store ShroomTek before use? Is there a shelf life?

ShroomTek is shelf stable and is viable within the first year after manufacture, and likely longer. However, we have found best success can be achieved if you use it within 30 days of receipt.

Do I need any special supplies to use ShroomTek?

To inoculate your bag:

Later in the process (once colonized):

  • Scissors or a utility knife (sterilized)
  • An XL rubber band
  • A spray bottle of room temperature distilled or previously boiled water

What is Spore Boostr?

ShroomTek includes a 5ml vial of Spore Boostr, which is a nutrient-rich broth that turns slow-growing spores into fast-growing liquid culture. If you're using a spore syringe, simply inject your spores into Spore Boostr before inoculating your ShroomTek bag and allow them to germinate. After 1-2 weeks, when you see visible mycelium, it's ready to inoculate your ShroomTek bag.

How soon can I expect my bag to start pinning?

Depending on the mushroom species and strain, it will take about 25-30 days before pins form.

What is the average time for a flush, from start to finish?

On average, it will take between 30-60 days to grow a full flush, depending on the mushroom species and strain.

Can I use my ShroomTek bag immediately?

It is best practice to wait a minimum of one week before using to ensure the bag was not compromised during transit. (Keep in mind that your purchase is 100% guaranteed and if your bag was compromised, North Spore will replace it.)

How should I store my ShroomTek bag while its colonizing?

Allow your bag to colonize undisturbed and out of direct sunlight. Temperature for incubation shouldn't exceed 75 degrees F or dip below 55 degrees F. Keeping your bag at the higher end of the temperature range will encourage faster colonization.

Is there a way to speed up colonization?

IMPORTANT: Do this without opening the bag.

When the mycelium has grown three to four inches outward from the point of injection, carefully massage the bag to break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate. This will dramatically speed up the colonization process.

Why do I need a rubber band for my ShroomTek bag?

Using a rubber band during colonization encourages top pinning by cutting off oxygen to the bottom of the block. It also helps to prevent side pins from forming.

When do I need to cut the bag open?

Once your pins have fully formed, you will need to create a “hood” to increase fresh air exchange. (See instructions for complete details.)

When do I need to add humidity to the bag?

After the bag is cut open to create the hood, moisture will escape. For this reason, we recommend spraying the sides and hood of the bag several times over the course of a few hours. By spreading out the sprays, moisture will be absorbed rather than pooling at the bottom. (See instructions for complete details.)

How do I harvest my ShroomTek bag?

To harvest, reach your hand around the base of the mushroom cluster and twist. This motion should be enough to pop your mushrooms off the block. You can also use a knife or scissors if you prefer.

Be sure to remove all of the fruiting body remaining on the block down to the myceliated substrate to prepare for a second fruiting and prevent rotting and possible contamination.
