Bring one of nature’s most distinctive mushrooms to your growing space. The Reishi ‘Plant & Grow’ Mushroom Starter Block contains an established Ganoderma lucidum culture, giving beginners a practical way to explore Reishi cultivation without preparing substrate or inoculating logs.

Reishi—also known as Ling Zhi in China—is an edible medicinal mushroom recognized for its glossy, brown fruiting bodies and traditional use. As the mushrooms mature, they develop a striking, lacquered appearance that makes this starter block both a cultivation project and a natural display.

This USDA Certified Organic Reishi starter block is suitable for planting in a shaded outdoor location or maintaining in an appropriate indoor growing environment. Choose a spot protected from direct sunlight, provide consistent moisture according to the included guidance, and allow time for the fruiting bodies to develop.

Unlike fast-fruiting oyster kits, Reishi grows at a more deliberate pace. That slower development offers an excellent opportunity to observe fungal biology, from colonized substrate to fully formed conks. Patience, humidity, and stable conditions are key to achieving the best results.

Designed for true beginners, the Plant & Grow format makes an approachable introduction to outdoor mushroom cultivation while remaining engaging for experienced gardeners interested in medicinal mushroom species. It is especially well suited to shaded garden beds, containers, and other protected growing spaces.

Receiving & Storage

Remove starter from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Plant & Grow starters should be used within 1 week of receipt. If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your block for up to 6 months.

How to Grow

Reishi is vigorous, fast-growing, and perfect for new outdoor cultivators. Taking slightly longer to fruit than other varieties, you'll notice they're ready when their "antlers" spring up out of the ground.

How to Initiate Fruiting Outdoors

  • Choose a shaded location: Find a cool, humid spot like under trees, beside a fence, or in a sheltered garden bed.
  • Bury the block: Remove your block entirely from the plastic and bury it in soil or mulch with about 1" of material above the block.
  • Maintain consistent moisture: Mist the surrounding soil or mulch regularly (1–2x daily in dry weather) to prevent the block from drying out.

Temperature & Airflow

  • Reishi thrive in moderate temperatures (ideally 65–80°F), making spring, late summer, and fall the best seasons for outdoor cultivation.
  • Ensure good airflow to prevent excessive CO₂ buildup. Avoid enclosed or stagnant air pockets.

Special Considerations

  • Reishi mushrooms are very slow growing.
  • Because of the slow growth rate, there is greater risk of contamination when opened and buried. Consider leaving reishi in its bag until pinning has begun.

Harvesting Your Mushrooms

Mushrooms can be harvested by twisting the base and then trimming away any substrate. They can be dried in the open air.

Growth Parameters

For the best quality mushrooms, try to adhere to these general temperature and fruiting time guidelines.

Bury. Water. Harvest.

No complicated setup, just a simple method designed for outdoor gardens.

Pick your spot

Choose a shaded area with soil or mulch. Dig a hole about the size of the starter block, deep enough so it can be fully covered once placed. A cool, protected spot will give you the best results.

Plant the block

Remove the mushroom starter from its bag and place it in the hole. Fill in the sides with soil so there are no gaps, then cover the top with a couple inches of wood chips to help retain moisture.

Watch it grow

Water after planting and keep it lightly watered, especially on dry days. In as little as 1 to 2 weeks, mushrooms begin to appear. Harvest fresh clusters right from your garden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Plant & Grow blocks are designed for real garden beds. If you can grow vegetables, you can grow mushrooms right alongside them — and they can help support healthier soil and stronger plants over time.

It’s as easy as planting a seedling. Just bury the block, water lightly, and let it grow. No complicated setup or special tools required.

Plant it in shaded areas, along garden edges, or right next to your vegetables and herbs. Anywhere your garden already gets consistent watering works well.

You can start harvesting in as little as two weeks, depending on the variety and conditions. It’s one of the fastest ways to harvest from your garden.

Yes. Mushrooms are resilient and grow in a wide range of climates. If your garden supports vegetables, this will work for you. Plant & Grow varieties are easy to recognize, and look-alikes are unlikely to grow in a garden setting.
