Our USDA-certified organic Snow Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) grain spawn features a popular strain that produces firm caps with a sweet flavor and aroma that holds its shape when cooked. The taste of snow oyster mushrooms is very mild, and some even describe it as slightly woody and earthy. Snow oysters are great for confident beginners and are reliable indoor year-round producers. If kept in the right conditions, they will yield substantial first, second, and even third harvests (making them an ideal commercial variety!)

Snow oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor cultivation year round. When used for outdoor cultivation, snow oysters will fruit in the cooler months.

Recommended use:

  • Snow oyster grain spawn can be used for indoor production using sawdust or straw or outdoor production using straw or wood chips.
  • Do not use grain spawn for log inoculation.
  • This is not a mushroom grow kit. Snow oyster grain spawn must be combined with a substrate in order to fruit.

Upon receiving your spawn:

Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Indoor cultivation

Oyster mushroom grain spawn can be mixed into sterilized or lime pasteurized substrates including but not limited to hardwood sawdust, straw, and coffee grounds.

Note: Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it. If you are new to growing mushrooms, we recommend purchasing a book on mushroom cultivation.

Outdoor cultivation

Oyster spawn can be spread in chopped straw or wood chips as shown in the video below! Making outdoor beds is one of the easiest methods for growing any type of oyster mushroom.

Be sure to use clean, untreated products when making outdoor beds.

Storing

If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your spawn for up to 4 months.

Cooking

Snow Oysters can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook them until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

Ingredients

Our grain spawn is USDA certified organic and made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. It contains a blend of locally sourced, organic, and non-GMO grains and supplements from farms in New England and North America.

Cautions & considerations

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, grain spawn is not an all-in-one kit and cannot be used to fruit mushrooms out of the bag. Grain spawn must be mixed with bulk substrate before you can fruit it.

Grain spawn can be used in a wide variety of ways including indoor growing, outdoor growing, or to make more grain spawn. (Grain spawn can be used to make plug or sawdust spawn, not just other grain spawn.)

  • Indoors, you can mix grain spawn with bulk substrate to grow in bags, in containers, or to create fruiting cakes.
  • Outdoors, you can mix grain spawn with straw or wood chips to make beds and containers. (Note: Grain spawn can not be used for logs.)
  • A grain-to-grain transfer allows you to extend the life of your grain and create more grain spawn.

Our grain spawn is a proprietary blend that features nutrient-rich organic millet and wheat berries.

Snow Otster

The grain spawn inoculated eighteen 4 pound bags of substrate. It rapidly colonized the substrate but has yet to fruit. That is why I gave it 4 stars. I haven’t grown this variety before so I’m waiting to see how it does.

Looks like you are off to a great start, Roger! Don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team if you ever need anything!

Looks Great!

The Snow Oyster grain Spawn came within a few days of securing the order. The block looks to be well-colonized and in great shape with no contamination. I'm looking forward to crumbling this up and adding it to a raised vegetable bed. It should be well-established to grow mushrooms after a few months over the summer.

Thanks Steven! The team is here to help if you ever need anything.

Late start this spring - 1st time grower

I got my white Oyster mushrooms late in the spring, about 1 April. I followed your instructions to grow in buckets. I anxiously awaited some sign of pinning. I misted the buckets 2-3 times a day. After two months with no sign of a fruiting body, I lifted the lids and checked for mycelium. My buckets were solid mycelium, the straw was covered. I continued to mist and kept the buckets in a cool dark area in my garage. Not a pin developed. I gave up and quit trying to grow the Oysters. A couple weeks ago, 1 Oct., I lifted the lids and poured a little cold lime water into the buckets and left them in the cold area of the garage. Three days ago I had pinning in multiple bucket holes. I moved the buckets outdoors in shade and they got lots of rain on them. Today there are large clusters of small oyster mushrooms all over the buckets. My guess is we had a hot summer and the mushrooms laid dormet and waited for the first freeze. I am 82 yrs old and never have taken a picture on my phone. I will try to send you a couple if I figure out how.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this experience, David! We're so glad to hear about your success with the snow oysters. Please reach out if you ever need anything!

Snow Oyster Review

The product came packaged well. I innoculated my masters mix substrate, and the bag grew in very well, however I have not been able to get it to pin. It is a beautiful mushroom, and seems that it should be easy to grow, but I cannot get it to pin. It is in a fruiting tent with average humidity of 95%, and avg temperature of 64 deg F.

Mind. Blown.

1st off, any problems iv had with anything iv gotten from here has been handled very professionally but I really came to say somthing about this grainspawn.

I bought this grainspawn 2 years and expanded it to bulk right as I got it. After the blocks were done producing I moved them to my deck and they sat for year(I'm lazy leave me alone). Then I moved them to my Shed and they sat another year.
After 2 years of not being in fruiting conditions and going through intense heat through the summer and bitter cold in the winter. I had 4 blocks produce 1 more time in my shed. After 2 years! I got 2 lbs off of them. Blew my freaking mind. Still tasty to

I love it

I ordered twice from this company, the first time I ordered was pink oyster spawn and the fruiting was amazing! I ordered a second which is this one, snow oyster, with two other type of spawns and some of it have finally fruit now. They gave a lot of spawn as well. The ship time is a little slow, but I guess it takes time to make the spawn and have it ready to ship out. My advice is order it a month before when you grow it.

Snow oysters

The spawn arrived when expected and as described. The weather in NYS was a bit cold so I had to store the spawn in my refrigerator for two weeks. The snow oyster mycelium was already growing in the bag before I could get it into my straw bed. I hope to be enjoying mushrooms in three months. I have other cultures in stump, logs and winecaps in wood chips. I am new to this and only got a few mushrooms from the log culture \in the first year but am hopeful that I will harvest a bounty this summer.

Perfect for outdoor beds in early spring

I must admit, this is pretty exciting stuff. This is my first time growing mushrooms outdoors in beds and this has been a really fun experience. The spawn arrived perfectly. They send you a good 5-6lbs so you get lots to experiment and play with. I’m in zone 9, with mild winters, and this beautiful grain spawn has gone directly into shady garden beds with straw. When your spawn arrives, they include all the info you need for how to store it until it’s ready for use. I can’t wait to order wine cap spawn next.
