Edible & Medicinal Mushrooms of New England
Author | David Spahr |
Format | Paperback |
# of pages | 248 |
This beautifully illustrated guidebook provides specific, easy-to-understand information on finding, collecting, identifying, and preparing the safer and more common edible and medicinal mushroom species of New England and Eastern Canada. Author David Spahr combines his mycological expertise and photographic skill to produce an attractive and detailed overview of his subject. Based on decades of practical experience and research, the book is written in a clear and forthright style that avoids the dry, generic descriptions of most field guides.
This book also provides useful ideas for cooking mushrooms. Rather than simply providing recipes, the book discusses the cooking characteristics of each variety, with advice about matching species with appropriate foods. Many mushrooms contain unique medicinal components for boosting the immune system to fight cancer, HIV, and other diseases, and Spahr offers practical and prudent guidelines for exploration of this rapidly emerging area of alternative therapeutic practice.

Friendly writing style makes it very engaging!
I ordered this book to help complete my library of guides for the East Coast, and was immediately impressed by the laid back, conversational style of Spahr's writing. Unlike some other guides which can read a little dense or dry, this book's engaging style ensures that you ENJOY reading it cover to cover instead of simply pulling it out as needed. The advice on equipment for foraging at the beginning is thorough, and I especially enjoyed the short sections on propagation methods and dyeing with fungi in the back. A worthy addition to any mycological library!
Exactly what I needed!
I was looking for a field guide made specifically for the east cost and I am very happy with this book from that perspective! I expected it to be more dry like a manual but was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoy reading it, which is great for me since I have trouble staying on task (even when I want to) when I don't feel engaged. What a great book!
A worthy addition to a foraging bag
This book is easy to read for any level of forager. There are great photos and details for identification. I also appreciated the culinary tips for when you find your specimens. This book is too big for a pocket but could be easily fit in a small backpack with your supplies. This is one of a couple of guides I bring with me into the woods on any walk.
