19 reviewsPleurotus djamor: This tropical Oyster strain thrives in warm weather. It produces beautiful clusters of pink to near red mushrooms that are a favorite at farmer's markets. The color intensifies when they grow with adequate light.
Grain Spawn - This is used for outdoor straw or wood chip beds or commercial indoor production using sawdust or straw. You do not use grain spawn for log inoculation. Grain spawn comes in bags approximately 6lbs each.
For species that grow well on logs please check out our outdoor log kits, plug spawn and sawdust spawn and the tools you need to get started.
Inoculation:
Outdoor Beds - With Oyster mushrooms you may choose to use grain spawn to inoculate outdoor straw beds. We've had success growing Oyster mushrooms in our raised garden beds by sprinkling grain spawn in the beds in the spring. We had Oysters growing right out of our soil!
Indoor Commercial Production - Pink Oyster mushroom grain spawn can be mixed into sterilized or lime pasteurized substrates including but not limited to hardwood sawdust, straw, and coffee grounds. These processes range from requiring a fair amount of infrastructure and equipment for larger projects to simple and low-tech. We recommend purchasing a book on mushroom cultivation if you are interested in pursuing this style of mushroom production as a hobby or profession. We recommend 'Radical Mycology: A Treatise on Seeing and Working with Fungi' by Peter McCoy, 'Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation' by Tradd Cotter, or 'Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms' by Paul Stamets.
Difficulty: Beginner
Pink Oysters are a great mushroom for beginners. They are reliable producers during the warmer months. Can be produced commercially. Shelf life on these mushrooms is not as good as other varieties, but their intense color makes them a great farmers' market mushroom.
Cooking: Pink Oysters can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all Oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook Pink Oysters until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.
Properties: The Pink Oyster mushroom has a high protein content, several B vitamins, and all the essential amino acids (Marley, 2009). Its medicinal benefits include promoting anti-tumor activity and lowering high cholesterol. Oyster mushroom fruiting bodies and distillations have been shown to reduce tumor size in several studies on mice, rats, and hamsters (Hobbs, 1995). Additionally, Oyster mushrooms have been used in the Czech Republic as the main ingredient in a dietary supplement used to treat high cholesterol (Hobbs, 1995). Studies in animals have shown that a diet of Oyster mushrooms reduced the development of plaque in major arteries (Bobek et al., 1995).

Had tried mushrooms kits before... miserably failed. Found North Spore videos on YouTube. Ordered 5 diff types. Did the crate method with straw, and put in plastic bags. Here we are 3 weeks later and I’m starting to get fruit!!! This is the coolest thing I’ve ever done. Thank you so much, I’m telling everybody about it!!!
The First bag i got seems open i contacted Them and within a couple Days got a fresh one and IT was perfect great communication and support Thx guys
My order arrived very quickly. This was my second batch and I was well pleased with the first one. I am experimenting with a different substrate this time and intend to keep growing mushrooms and expanding the varieties in the future. Thanks for the great product!
I received my grain spawn very quickly and it was beautifully colonized. I'm now almost to fruiting conditions in my bucket! Highly recommend.
After watching North Spore's youtube video on growing mushrooms outdoors, I decided to give it a try. I decided to go with the pink oyster because it is supposed to be more heat tolerant and I live in south Florida. I also had great success with their spray and grow pink oyster kit in the past. I inoculated straw in hampers and set them outside. It has been about a month and they already had a small flush. They seem to be growing vigorously through out the straw and I hope to get larger flushes once the whole hamper is colonized! If you're looking for a way to get started with grain spawn this is the way to go! I cant wait to try more!
