This morel strain (Morchella exuberans) is one of the most prized wild edibles. It produces large, pitted fruiting bodies with a unique texture and rich flavor. Unlike many cultivated mushrooms that have a robust meaty flavor, morels are best described as woody, nutty, and earthy.
Morels are a famously difficult mushroom species to cultivate but are great for experimenting with new methods. Given their difficulty, we do not currently recommend for commercial use. (Please let us know of your successes and failures when trying to cultivate this species!)
Recommended use:
- Morel sawdust spawn is only recommended for use in outdoor beds or in forest floor inoculations.
- Morel sawdust spawn must combined with a substrate (like compost mixed with wood ash) in order to fruit.
- Please note: Morel mushrooms do not grow on logs.
Upon receiving your spawn:
Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

We consider this an experimental spawn strain which will benefit from cultivation trials in burned substrate.
Our Morel culture was obtained from fruiting specimens in burnt pitch pine forest in New England. Known colloquially as ‘greenies’ in the western U.S., burn Morels are extremely rare in Northern New England.

If you don’t plan to use your morel sawdust spawn right away, store in the refrigerator. Use within 6 months of receipt.

Morels make a great accompaniment to meats, fish, and risottos. Larger morels may be stuffed and grilled, baked, or sautéed.
Always cook morel mushrooms thoroughly. Morels should not be eaten raw or consumed in large quantities because they contain a toxic substance which is only destroyed when cooked.
-
All our spawn is made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our sawdust spawn is handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods and supplements from farms and forests in New England and North America.

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

every thing i have got has been great
Excited
Bag came quickly and in great shape. It takes a little while to know if they’ll pop up, but I’m excited and have had success with other spawn from north spore!
Morel Spawn in Beds
I ordered two bags of morel spawn. North Spore was great! Shipment arrived very quickly, so I could try a couple different locations for the fall. With one bag, I inoculated a bed of peat moss, gypsum, and hardwood charcoal/ash that I located underneath the intersection of an oak, beech, and elm trees. I lined the bed with catalpa logs to give it a rot resistant hardwood border. With the other bag, I inoculated a number of locations with different conditions, mostly under various oak trees, but I also tried additional beech, pine, hickory, pecan, and even magnolia trees. Clearly I’m in the south, so I may have no success given the climate, but I picked cool moist locations. We’ll see what happens over the next couple of years. I went to order more morel spawn, thinking that I’d try some more locations (denser woods, the confluence of creek beds, etc.), but it was sold out. Don’t miss your opportunity to get morel spawn to experiment.
Experiment
Purchased two bags, and have spread the spore in 18 different locations with varying growing conditions to see if we can get anything to pop up. Bags arrived safely albeit a little later than expected, Northspore was helpful and remained in contact with updates, which was certainly nice.
This is Wild!
I always challenge myself to go up a notch in my experiments with mushrooms, so I ordered a bag of the Morel spawn. I used apple ash, sphagnum moss, sawdust, compost, potting soil and a cup of coffee, everything organic. Hopefully some Morel will pop up. I have bought 4 different mushrooms from North Spores and was happy with them. My Lion's Mane gave me 2 huge flushes, and I totem-poled the residual sawdust outside. Maybe I will have more fruits. NS is my trusted supplier.
