Golden Oyster (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) is a tropical strain that thrives in warmer temperatures and tends to fruit in summer months. It produces beautiful clusters of bright yellow caps that are a favorite at farmers' markets. When cooked, they have a mild nutty flavor and aroma that pairs well with most dishes. Oyster mushrooms are great for beginners because they colonize quickly and are reliable producers.
Each outdoor kit contains:
- A drill bit
- Log sealing wax
- A wax applicator
- 100ct plug spawn or voucher
- Instruction guide
That's not mold, it's mycelium!
Your kit includes plug spawn colonized with mushroom mycelium. It may appear covered with a soft, white, mold-like substance - that's the mushroom mycelium! It is completely normal. The mycelium of some species is more prominent than others.
-
Ordering a log kit with a voucher allows you to redeem your plug spawn at a later date. Vouchers make a great gift and are good for projects beyond a 3 month start date.
-
Ordering a kit with live spawn is best for projects that will be done within 3 months of ordering.
Plug spawn is living and perishable. It can live unrefrigerated for up to three months or refrigerated for up to 6 months.
-
Golden oysters prefer log, stump, and totem methods. Colonization is fast and should start producing in 4-12 months. Golden oysters are a tropical species and prefer to fruit in the summer months. They also prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen.

If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your spawn for up to 6 months.
-
Golden oyster mushrooms develop a cashew-like flavor when cooked to a slightly crispy texture. They can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when undercooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook them until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.
-
The spawn used in our mushroom plugs is grown on USDA certified organic grain and made with organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our plugs are handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods from farms and forests in New England and North America.
-
If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

A fun project--waiting is the hardest part!
I discovered North Spore at my local garden center in Colorado Springs, CO. Since then, I have inoculated logs with three different varieties: blue oysters, golden oysters, and shiitake mushrooms. North Spore's kits come with everyone you need to inoculate a log, including crystal clear instructions on how to select the right kind of wood. The kit comes with a high-quality drill bit, which made drilling the holes for 100+ plugs quite easy. The kit also comes with some wax, which can easily be melted in a small pot and applied to the plugs with the applicator (also included). Now comes the hard part--waiting to see what my inoculated logs produce. Overall, I've enjoyed my first mycological experiments, thanks to North Spore. I should add that their customer service team is exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Good for starting out!
The drill bit was the perfect size for the plug spawn, and this kit had pretty much everything I needed to start out with log inoculation.

We had so much fun getting logs and installing these wood pellets! I watch my logs every day waiting for mushroom pins to start! We don't have any yet but we've had lots of fun watching our counter top kits produce and reproduce. I'm confident this is the beginning of lots of mushroom play around the yard!
