Blue Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a fast substrate colonizer with a strong bluish-gray hue. It produces richly umami mushrooms with a soft, meaty texture that pairs well with most dishes. Oyster mushrooms are great for beginners because they colonize quickly and are reliable producers.
As our most productive oyster strain, blue oysters are reliable, cold-tolerant, and fruit prolifically in early spring or late fall. They are also ideal for commercial cultivation, especially when grown on straw.
Recommended use:
- Blue oyster sawdust spawn can be used for log projects and/or outdoor bed, container, and bucket projects.
- Blue oyster sawdust spawn must combined with a substrate (like straw) or used in log inoculation in order to fruit.
- If growing on logs, one bag of sawdust spawn will reliably inoculate up to 20 logs. (You can calculate how much you'll need here.)

Upon receiving your spawn:
Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Logs:
Blue oyster mushrooms work well with the log, stump, and totem methods. Colonization is fast and may start producing in 4-12 months, though fruiting is dependent on environmental triggers. They fruit best in the spring and fall and prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen. They will also work on maple.

If you don't plan to use your blue oyster sawdust spawn immediately, you can refrigerate it for up to 6 months.

Blue oyster mushrooms can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when under-cooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook Oysters until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Product excellence
Came faster then normal, not as colonized as previous orders, but always quality!
Strong mycelium!
Super fast colonizing spawn! It’s supposed to be for inoculation of logs but I’ve used it to inoculate some straw baskets and a wood chip bed. I definitely would order again.
You guys are awesome
We obviously haven't seen the results of these plugs yet but I'm sure like the rest of your products it will be awesome
Great Grain Spawn
I purchased the blue oyster grain spawn to grow in a 5-gallon bucket and it worked great! I spilled some and threw it in my garden and covered it with wood shavings and mesquite firewood and it even grew there too! Made cream of mushroom soup and mushroom risotto with them. Got at least two flushes out of it and looking like will get a small third.
Fantastic Spawn
Really good grain spawn, was fully colonized when arrived with no contaminants, stuck it in the fridge for a few weeks. After spawning to lime pasteurized straw, it colonized quickly and i have tons of pin sets right now! The millet is def superior to rye, broke up easy and gave lots of inoculation points, and the bag was sturdy enough to not break when breaking up for inoculation. Very much a fan, will buy again.
