Blue Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a fast substrate colonizer with a strong bluish-gray hue. It produces richly umami mushrooms with a soft, meaty texture that pairs well with most dishes. Oyster mushrooms are great for beginners because they colonize quickly and are reliable producers. As our most productive oyster strain, they are reliable, cold-tolerant, and fruit prolifically in early spring or late fall. They are also ideal for commercial cultivation, especially when grown on straw.
Recommended use:
- Blue oyster sawdust spawn can be used for log projects and/or outdoor beds, containers, and buckets.
- Sawdust spawn is ideal for larger log projects of 10 or more logs.
- This is not a mushroom grow kit. Blue oyster sawdust spawn must combined with a substrate (like straw) or used in log inoculation in order to fruit.
Upon receiving your spawn:
Remove it from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

To grow on logs using sawdust spawn, you will need a Log Inoculation Tool, Log Sealing Wax, and Wax Daubers.
For larger log projects you may also want to purchase an Angle Grinder Adapter and specialized 12mm drill bit.

Logs:
Blue oyster mushrooms work well with the log, stump, and totem methods. Colonization is fast and may start producing in 4-12 months, though fruiting is dependent on environmental triggers. They fruit best in the spring and fall and prefer softer hardwoods such as poplar and aspen. They will also work on maple.

If you don't plan to use your blue oyster sawdust spawn immediately, you can refrigerate it for up to 6 months.

Blue oyster mushrooms can easily replace button mushrooms in most recipes and pair well with many cuisines and flavors. Like all oyster mushrooms, they retain water and may develop a viscous texture when under-cooked. If you prefer a firm or dryer texture, continue to cook Oysters until their liquid has reduced and cooked off and they begin to brown.

All our spawn is made using organic cultures from our own culture bank. Our sawdust spawn is handmade from a blend of locally sourced, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO woods and supplements from farms and forests in New England and North America.

If you’re going to consume home-grown mushrooms, make sure to cook your fresh mushrooms thoroughly with heat. If it is your first time eating this species, it is best to start with a small amount to check for allergies, even if cooked.

Wow!!!!!!
This stuff is amazing!!! I decided to build a 6 piece, milk crate pyramid stuffed with straw inoculated with this spore. Within only one month I already had 6 small flushes. It’s so awesome to be able to use the shady corner of our lot to produce even more food!

Oyster Bucket
Awesome kids love them and they are good for my youngest and his diabetes. Thank you North Spore.

So Excited!
We used the straw dust spawn to make bed to grow the mushrooms in. We haven’t had mushrooms pop up yet but it’s looking really promising. Hope I have pics to share soon

Growing in my garden under straw
Already spreading under straw in my garden bed. Looking forward to mushrooms!

So delicious
Plated these in fall of 2022 and got to harvest them about 4-6 weeks later and they were amazing!

One best tasting oyster
Really love the taste of these blue oysters

Great Producer
I had great results with both the blue oyster mushroom sawdust spawn and the blue oyster fruiting block! The pic is of the sawdust spawn which I utilized like the fruiting block. I had multiple flushes from the fruiting block.

Loving the convenience of fresh mushrooms
This has been a super fun and easy DIY experience. Have been completing the steps as a family and getting my 6 year old involved. He's excited to have a chore that's accessible to him (misting the mushrooms). We just got our first crop in and will be tasting them in dinner tonight. Would highly recommend growing mushrooms and North Spore has been top notch.

Blue Oyster
Great, fruited after 2 weeks.

Fantastic Quality
North Spore products are amazing. So far I've succeeded with yellow and regular oyster mushrooms. I hope my Shiitake grow from the log in a year or so. I'm very satisfied!
